Crypto Stories: Vitalik Buterin talks creating Ethereum in previously unreleased 2014 interview

Cointelegraph’s Crypto Stories has released the latest episode. It featured audio never before heard from Vitalik Buterin during an exclusive interview. This was recorded at a conference held in Hong Kong in 2014. This animated short tells the story of Ethereum (ETH), which is the second largest cryptocurrency in terms of market capitalization.

Buterin first learned about Bitcoin in 2011 while a student at University of Waterloo. His father, a tech entrepreneur, was his first introduction to the currency. Buterin didn’t really take Bitcoin seriously until he started participating in Bitcoin forums set up by Satoshi Nakamoto.

Buterin began to research Bitcoin and became a writer at Bitcoin Weekly. He was paid $5 per article or $4.

He then joined Mihai Alisie to co-found Bitcoin Magazine with his newly acquired journalism skills. According to the magazine’s website, their first issue was published May 2012. The magazine now belongs to BTC Media.

At 19 years old, Buterin decided to leave university to work full-time on blockchain-related projects while he traveled around the globe. He realized that cryptocurrency could be used to do more than just make money and should give him more freedom.

Buterin had a dream to create a blockchain that could be used as a programming language. With the help of Mihai Alisie, and others, Ethereum was born. Officially, the project was announced in January 2014.
