Ethereum Merge: Community reacts with memes, GIFs and tributes

It has been less than one day since Ethereum made the historic transition from proof-of-stake to proof-of-stake. Most of the crypto community is still buzzing with excitement after the Merge.

The last Ethereum block that used the old proof-of work consensus mechanism was mined on Sept. 15, at 06:42.42 UTC. It was replaced by a more efficient proof-of-stake consensus method.

Many crypto enthusiasts and climate activists around the world have been delighted by the positive effect it will have on the environment, and hence crypto’s popularity.

Others were simply in awe at the technological feat of advancing a whole blockchain network without any stops.

Hayden Adams, founder and CEO of Uniswap Labs, told his 232.200 Twitter followers that reducing Ethereum’s energy consumption “will improve the network’s public image” more than any other thing in its “entire past.”

According to the Ethereum Foundation’s new PoS consensus mechanism, Ethereum will reduce energy consumption by 99.95%.

Adams believes that people underestimate this Merge aspect.

Ethereum’s energy consumption will be reduced by 99.98%, which will make it more popular than any other time in its history. This is a rightful claim. This aspect of the merger is greatly underestimated by many people.

Ripple Labs CEO Brad Garlinghouse tweeted that it was “truly amazing technological feat.” Yuga Labs, a NFT company, said this was a “big move” to scale Ethereum to its “first million users.”

Nischal Shetty (founder and CEO of Indian crypto-exchange WazirX) shared his congratulations and noted that Ethereum is the “OG smart contracts” and had played a major role in the creation of the Web3 ecosystem.

Dogecoin is now the second-largest PoW crypto by market capitalization. Even Dogecoin’s Twitter account shared its “much congratulations” to Vitalik Buterin, Ethereum co-founder, and all those involved with the Merge.

However, others are skeptical about Ethereum’s new consensus system.

Jordan Schachtel, an independent journalist, stated that the Merge transformed Ethereum into a WEF (World Economic Forum), coin. This will “by design”, put all control and value in the hands the people at the top.

Yes. By design. The people at the top get all the control and value. POS to a tee. https://t.co/P6reCy9O2T

Cardano enthusiasts on Twitter @Cardanians_io stated that the Ethereum Merge will not change the high transaction fees and scaling issues of Cardano.

Cardano’s Vasil Fork would increase the Cardano network’s scalability, according to the account. According to the account, “Ethereum is basically catching up with Cardano.”

StarkWare co-founder and president Eli Ben-Sasson said earlier this week that Ethereum’s Merge was “like completing a launch of a rocket”, in that we still have a long way to go.

According to Buterin, the Merge was the first of five steps that will ultimately bring the smart contract blockchain to the “endgame” in Ethereum’s development.

The success of ETHMerge will have a huge impact on the whole crypto industry. The team deserves a big hat for their execution with the entire world watching. This historic moment kept the bullet train moving towards a better future for all. pic.twitter.com/NkhXhBvsV9
